The Old Testament consists of the first 39 books of the Bible. It is broken into five sections:
The Pentateuch
The Pentateuch (or Torah) consists of the first five books of the Bible. This portion of Scripture covers a wide expanse of time; from the creation of the Earth through Israel’s arrival at the Promised Land. It is widely accepted that Moses was the author of these writings (excluding the portion that details his own death). These books are often referred to as “The Law” throughout scripture.

The Historical books
The Historical Books are rich with stories of harrowing battles, powerful kings, brave queens, and foreboding prophecy. These books follow the story of the nation of Israel as they try and fail to obey the Law given to them by Moses. When they are faithful to God, they prosper and flourish. However, when they stray from His commands, disaster comes.

The Major prophets
The Major Prophets are not called “major” because they are more important than the other Prophets. Instead, this designation was attributed to these writings due to their size. God gave the prophets messages to speak to the nation of Israel. These messages often were used to instruct and reprove the people and to urge them to return to the Lord.

The Minor prophets
The Major Prophets are not called “minor” because they are less important than the other Prophets. Instead, this designation was attributed to these writings due to their size.
